Crittenton Legacy Award for Advocacy
Barbara Huberman, RN, BSN, MEd
National Director, Education and Outreach, Advocates for Youth
Ms. Huberman is recognized as a national expert, advocate and leader in the field of adolescent sexual health and pregnancy prevention. As a board member and executive director of several non profit, reproductive health organizations, Ms. Huberman’s 50 years of leadership and vision have resulted in over half of the states in the USA having strong state organizations on teen pregnancy prevention and an increased national understanding of appropriate, effective, science based pregnancy prevention strategies.
Early in her career, Ms. Huberman was a nurse/counselor/educator for Florence Crittenton Services of Charlotte, North Carolina and it was those experiences that led her to focus on creating opportunities for all young people to grow up to be sexually healthy adults. She created and leads the European Study Tour each summer to expose Americans to other cultures and how they approach adolescent sexuality in a more positive and responsible way which has led to a significant and long lasting decrease in their teen pregnancy and STI rates. Ms. Huberman was one of the first Lamaze childbirth educators in the US, one of the founders of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and a former President of the National Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention (now Healthy Teen Network).
